At the age of 13, Hayley Mills became the final recipient of the Academy Juvenile Award, awarded for her work in 1960’s “Pollyanna.”
The film would be the first of many for Mills at Walt Disney Studios, where she became synonymous with Disney’s live-action efforts throughout the early ‘60s, starring in such classics as “The Parent Trap,” “In Search of the Castaways,” “Summer Magic,” “The Moon-Spinners” and “That Darn Cat!”
The often-remade “The Parent Trap” may remain Mills’ most iconic film, in which she played separated identical twins who meet back up in a summer camp and plot to reunite their parents. The film also led to Mills scoring a Top 10 single on the Billboard pop charts with its signature song, “Let’s Get Together.” She would reprise the roles of Susan and Sharon in three TV film sequels in the 1980s.
Her association with Disney also led her to star in a short-lived Disney Channel series titled “Good Morning, Miss Bliss,” which was aquired by NBC and reformatted as “Saved By the Bell.” Mills was named a Disney Legend in 1998.
Outside Disney, Mills’ hit films include “The Chalk Garden,” “The Trouble With Angels” and “The Famly Way.” Mills continues to work regularly in film and television, and will soon be seen on the big screen in M. Night Shyamalan’s “Trap,” set for release in August.
She was also recently featured in an episode of Amazon Prime’s hit series, “The Wheel of Time.”
